What makes a great song? What a great question, to which there is no easy answer. Just last night we went to a show that addressed that very question. Much of today’s update was spent talking about a great songwriter and her story. A few musical excursions evolved as well, some of which may have to turn into lessons in the near future.

I certainly appreciate the feedback on my recent infatuation with Franco Mussida’s piece Il Sogno Di Leonardo. I hope to see some videos of anybody’s work on it, particularly in progress as I am not completely sure of where problems might arise. I have never had a student work on it yet. I also appreciate any feedback you have on levels of difficulty as I frequently have a hard time determining that.

This week’s new lessons also included Ben Harper’s Diamonds On The Inside and a fun romp into Bird Dog, by The Everly Brothers.

It will probably be a couple weeks until the next update as we are right into the start of the Holiday Season here now and many things are up in the air. I hope everybody here in the states has a nice break and some quality family time.

Until December, keep the fingers moving and the brain waves flowing,

Neil

P.S. The complete PFM album Stati Di Imaginazione can be heard here-

What was that? Some kind of G7sus4/D with a rogue Maj7#11 floating on top? The discussions about A Hard Days Night have brought scholars and musicologists to fisticuffs. All I ever tried to do was get as close as possible with just 6 strings. In today’s update I revisit the conflict a bit, and wrestle with another Beatles’ rocker, Hey Bulldog. I was glad Max got to that for us as it has lingered on my to-do list for years.

This week also brought us another Bee Gees classic, Words, a geography update on triads up the neck with Sandy, and the start to a lesson on the Acoustic Snapshot from last week, Leonardo’s Dream by Franco Mussida of the Italian Progressive band PFM.

And speaking of Snapshots, it was a bit of a relief to get to Blues Land this week. I have been enamored with this tune for maybe a year now without feeling confident enough to tackle a complete performance. That can now be checked off the bucket list and I can get on with other nagging musical endeavors, like studying the Recommend A Lesson page and beefing things up here at TG.

I spent most of my time this week working on a solo guitar arrangement of a piece by PFM’s guitarist, Franco Mussida. The big plan was to get to a lesson on it but I needed to get a good performance of it first. So one part down and on to the lesson next week.

We did get an interesting lesson from Max taking a page from the instrumental arrangement of a rock song book, Have Love Will Travel, a caveman rock tune from the 1960s. Vanessa brought us So Sad by The Everly Brothers, and in the FOTW department we sat in with Fred as he tried Good Time Charlie’s Got The Blues for the first time.

There were some great contributions recently in the Busking and Collaborations Forums, including The Everlys, Heart, Mason Williams, Glenn Frey, and our recently departed Tom Petty. I really do hope to get to a few more lessons on his songs in the near future.

I want to thank our marketing department of IGCers for the nice words about camp. It is always great when I see we have someone signed up for the first time. I hope there are quite a few more potential first-timers out there who are considering joining us.

Enjoy the update,

Neil
