This week I spent more time playing the guitar than I can remember in many months. As a matter of fact it was probably back around the time I was arranging White Bird where I was playing for a couple hours a day.

One of my personal goals is to get good recordings of pieces I work on, good enough to perform and turn into an Acoustic Snapshot. Right now I am working on a few of those and that’s what became most of today’s episode.

It started with a little improv on Imagine, inspired by my daughters’ missing camp performance, and I went through three tunes that are getting close, The Poirot Theme, Blues Land by Jerry Reed, and a little teaser of Bethena, which included a short demonstration of why you don’t usually want anybody listening to you practice. You have to play the hardest part over and over, and over…, as small or short as it may be.

I hope everybody has a relaxing and musical weekend!

This week I spent a little time playing my friend’s 12-string guitar, somehow it seemed like a good idea to round one up for the lesson on Even In The Quietest Moments. The lesson was inspired by a couple things, the first being Dan’s performance of it at IGC 2017, and the second was that Matt (our seldom seen man behind the scenes) has been badgering me since the beginning of TG to get to some Supertramp songs. I have to admit that after listening to most of their albums non-stop lately I have developed a better appreciation for them.

Most of today’s News consisted of messing around with the 12-string and I am open to suggestions of any other songs that you think might make good lessons while I have this behemoth around. I played bits and pieces of Pink Floyd, The Byrds, Led Zeppelin, and ended with In Christ There Is No East Or West by John Fahey but played more in the style of Leo Kottke.

On a different front, I got a call from my good friend Jim Bruno over at TotallyVocals. He is heavily involved in a reunion of his Stickband, some of the pioneers in popularizing the Chapman Stick. Be sure to check out his latest project at stickbandsj.com.

Another thing that I have been considering is getting out into the world away from TG Central and trying to get together with a small group of distant students (like 15-20) for a weekend workshop or mini-camp. The idea would be to do some of what we do at IGC but on a smaller scale.

It would be great to hear if anybody would be interested in spending a weekend in Amsterdam with me and Vanessa, probably in a hotel where we would have a few classes, some semi-private lessons, some performances and open mic nights or afternoons.

Please send me your thoughts on the idea. We are looking at July 7-8, 2018 in Amsterdam and possibly doing something similar on the East Coast the following September or October.

That’s the News for now,

Neil

This week TG Central was just about recovered from the guests of August when our fearless leader, Matt Williams swooped in for a cameo. It had been a few months since his last visit but years before that one.

As the temperature approached 100 degrees we sweltered in the the studio for a short time and talked about some of the things going on at TotallyGuitars.

The big news this week was that we finalized plans for IGC 2018, and all the details are live at www.internationalguitarcamp.com now, along with some cool videos which I will get up on the Forum soon.

We also talked about some of the behind-the-scenes things going on that the TG team is working on constantly. Unfortunately, very little playing today because it was just too hot. Hopefully you will enjoy the thoughts anyway.
